Dubplate / The Big Issue

Machine cutting groove on vinyl record.

Dubplate / The Big Issue, 2005-2006, 16 mm Video

At the time I started DJing as a teenager, a dublate was the biggest treasure being carried in a record bag. In the beginning of the 2000s, vinyl was replaced by digital files as well as film and photographic analogue material was on the verge of its own materialist obsolescence. I wanted to capture the medial paradigmatic changes concerning underground music genres. Which losses happen by technological transformations of usage?

The movie Dubplate is shot on b/w 16 mm in the most famous acetate dubplate cutting house in London, the Music House, crucial for the soundsystem scene. It is a part of an installation with the 40mins video documentary The Big Issue (included in the Ursula Blickle Archive, Belvedere Vienna), with interviews of active members, collectors, producers, DJ’ s, club promoters of different underground music genres of the mid 2000s.
